There's a storm coming. Can I buy flood insurance now?

You shouldn't wait until an impending storm to buy flood insurance. Why? Because a flood insurance policy typically takes 30-days to take effect. This means that if you wait to purchase a flood insurance policy until there's a storm that could bring potentially damaging floods with it, you may not be covered. It is better to be proactive and evaluate your risk, whether or not you are required to purchase a flood insurance policy.

There are some circumstances where that 30-day waiting period does not apply. For more information on some of the exceptions, please read FEMA's "Don't Wait. Buy Flood Insurance Today." This document was released by FEMA Region 6 and has information specific to the State of Texas including contact information. Information not related to general guidelines and policy can be disregarded.
