Community Rating System (CRS)

NFIP CRS LogoIt is estimated that the Township's efforts saves property owners around $150,000 annually!

How do we do that?
By participating in the Community Rating System.

What is the Community Rating System?
The Community Rating System is a volunatary program admistered by FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that incentivizes communities to do more with their floodplain management program. Under the CRS, the flood insurance premiums of a community's residents and businesses are discounted to reflect that community's work to manage and protect development in the floodplain, to preserve the natural functions of the floodplain, and to mitigate other related impacts such as stormwater.

The discount afforded to property owners is based upon the level of effort by the Township. That level of effort is quantified by FEMA through a class rating. Participating communities are ranked from class 1 to 9. Class 9 communities pass on a 5% to property owners that have a flood insurance policy through the NFIP while Class 1 communities pass on a 45% discount to property owners in the special flood hazard area that have a flood insurance policy through the NFIP.

The Township has been a participating member of the CRS since 2015 and we are one of only about 1,500 participating communities nationwide and around 110 in New Jersey. We are currently rated as a Class 7 community. That means that all property owners in the Township with a policy through the NFIP and located in the special flood hazard area receives a 15% discount on their flood insurance premiums. The CRS program is one of the few ways a community can not only protect lives and property by enacting responsible rules and regulations but save residents real dollars.
