Township Mitigation Efforts

Township SealThe Township has been and continues to address the important topic of floodplain mitigation in a variety of ways. Our efforts include:

  • Actively seeking federal funding for the Rahway River Flood Mitigation Study in coorperation with numerous adjacent communities;
  • The adoption and enforcement of the Township's 'Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance', 'Floodplain Overlay District' and the 'Stormwater Management Ordinance';
  • The enforcement of our own along with the State's regulations and best practices regarding stormwater run-off when it designs its own projects or reviews projects submitted to the Township for approval;
  • The maintenance of streams and pipes to help remove any clogs that may occur which could worsen flood events;
  • Active participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the Community Rating System (CRS) to help reduce flood insurance premiums and mitigate the potential impact of future flood events;
  • Staff from the Township's Engineering Department, Office of Planning & Zoning, and Department of Public Works are available for site visits to evaluate flood and drainage problems;
  • The Township Engineer and the Zoning Officer are both Certified Floodplain Managers (CFM) and are able to provide advice and guidance regarding floodplain management and mitigation.
