Shade Tree Commission

The newly established Cranford Shade Tree Commission (STC) will consist of nine voting members. The members must be residents of Cranford and are appointed by the Mayor. It is a volunteer commission.

The Shade Tree Commission was established to ensure the appropriate management of the Cranford community forest. It has responsibility for the regulation, planting and care of shade and ornamental trees and shrubbery located in the Township of Cranford on public property.

The STC will assist the Zoning Board of Adjustment, Planning Board and/or Building Department in an advisory capacity when applications involve the preservation and inventory of trees within the Township.

Critical objectives for the STC are implementation of the Cranford Community Forestry Management Plan (CCFMP), and attaining “approval status” for the township with the NJ Shade Tree and Community Forestry Assistance Act. Implementation of the CCFMP will include: tree planting, tree maintenance, tree care disaster planning, tree hazard management, and public education, awareness and outreach. The STC will work closely with the Cranford Department of Public Works and an arborist to accomplish these objectives. Individual members will be encouraged to take CORE training during their tenure.

Township Tree Reminder

The Cranford Shade Tree Commission would like to remind residents that all trees in the Cranford right of way or on Cranford property need to be attended to by the designated Cranford tree crew. Cranford residents are not authorized to prune or have an outside tree company attend to township trees. Shade Tree Commission Meetings

STC meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building, located at 8 Springfield Avenue.
