FAQs: Footbridge Replacement Project at Balmiere Pkwy / Riverside Dr.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about the Footbridge Replacement Project at Balmiere Parkway / Riverside Drive

Q. Is the Balmiere / Riverside Footbridge Project being done by the Township?
A. No. This is a project being done by Union County Engineering Department, which has oversight of the Rahway River and the river banks.

Q. When is the project going to start?
A. The County Engineer reported to the Township today (04/16/2004) the contractor will begin mobilizing equipment tomorrow (04/17/2024).

Q. It seems the project is being done very abruptly. Is there an imminent danger to the existing walkway that is prompting this to be done right now?
A. The County has planned to replace the bridge, but no date had been set. Once advised of the start date, the Township was proactive in notifying residents and the Board of Education.

Q. Why a new footbridge? Wasn’t it replaced a few years ago?
A. Several years ago the wooden planks were replaced. Not the entire bridge. The new bridge will be a suspension design eliminating support columns in the river that catch fallen trees, limbs and other debris creating a dam that can contribute to flooding. The new bridge will be similar to the new bridge in Nomahegan Park.

Q. Is there a reason it’s being removed in April when installation cannot start until fall?
A. Removal of the current bridge, columns, foundation and shoring up the riverbanks and the earthen berm on Riverside Drive take time and couldn’t be done after May 1. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations do not permit work in the riverbed May 1 through August 1. To avoid doing construction during hurricane season, the ideal time to start is April 15. Note: New Jersey's tropical storm activity is between August and late October. Q. Will any work take place during the summer?
A. Work will continue to finish up shoring the banks and the three sections of the bridge will be constructed. Preparing the area for the new bridge and installation is expected to start in the fall.

Q. Is there a safe, recommended alternate route for students and pedestrians to follow?
A. Cranford Police Traffic Division has prepared a safe walking route (see map). The Township provided the information to the Board of Education so it is shared with schools and families.

Q. Will the county/township work with the schools to provide bussing for the kids who will be impacted
A. Bussing is provided by the Board of Education and is determined based on driving distance not walking distance.

Q. Will the Jaycees Firecracker 4-Miler in July be canceled ?
A. No. The Police Department Traffic Division worked with the Jaycees to design a new route for this year’s race.

Q. Will residents be kept informed during the project?
A. Yes. The Township and Police will provide ongoing updates about any changes, temporary road closures or detours. For updates and accurate information please follow our social media, sign up for the Township Newsletter and check the website.
