Protect Your Property

Those who own property, both residential and non-residential, have a variety of different ways that they can protect their properties from potentially destructive natural hazards. Natural hazards aren't limited to floods. As recent history has proven to us; hurricanes, tropical storms, superstorms, and severe thunderstorms can bring high winds and hail along with the potential for flooding. 

How can you protect your property from these types of events?

Immediate / Short-Term

Immediate / Short-Term

  • Purchasing flood insurance which covers your structure and belongings;
  • Placing temporary barriers such as sand bags;
  • Turn on sump pumps and back-flow preventers;
  • Be prepared to shelter-in-place if necessary and have a 'Ready Bag' prepped;
  • Have a go-kit ready if evacuation may be necessary;
  • Prepare yourself and your family. Visit ready.gov for more!
  • Reinforcing / covering structural openings such as windows, doors, and garages;
  • Purchasing insurance that includes damage related to severe storms and wind;
  • Trimming trees and vegetation around your structure;
  • Cleaning out gutters;
  • Be prepared to shelter-in-place if necessary and have a 'Ready Bag' prepped;
  • Have a go-kit ready if evacuation may be necessary;

  • Purchasing and installing a generator;
  • Elevating your home and utilities above the Base Flood Elevation;
  • Installing waterproof / flood proof veneer or siding;
  • Install flood vent's to allow water to flow through unoccupied spaces;
  • Retrofit your home.

  • Purchasing and installing a generator;
  • Bracing / Reinforcing your roof, particularly for those that are gabled, including the use of 'hurricane straps' and/or 'anchoring';
  • Replace gabled roofs with hip roofs;
  • Retrofit your home and property in order to better withstand sustained heavy winds.
