There’s a New Face at Mr. J’s Deli, but Things Remain the Same

Mr. J’s Deli has been a Cranford staple since 1983. A steady stream of regulars head to the deli on a weekly (or sometimes daily) basis for its delicious breakfast and lunch dishes. The deli is most well-known for its Sloppy Joes, but it also serves up omelets, pancakes, subs, salads, burgers, and more. John Taggart took over as owner in 1994, but made the decision earlier this year to retire from the business. Starting in February, John began training Angelo Lomonte to take over the business, and in June, Angelo became the new owner of Mr. J's Deli.

Angelo worked as a Police Lieutenant in Hillside, but as he approached retirement he was looking to start a new chapter in his life. Angelo’s parents had owned a deli when he was growing up, so he was familiar with the food service business and was eager to return to it. The day after Angelo retired from the police force, he closed on ownership of Mr. J’s Deli.

The months that Angelo spent working with John proved to be invaluable, as the transition went incredibly smoothly. Additional help was also provided from longtime employees Kim, Marcos, and Fernando, and new employee, Lena. “Their assistance has really helped,” said Angelo. “Thanks to them, the quality and experience that people depend on Mr. J’s for has remained the same.”

Angelo has made an effort to be more active on Facebook and Instagram, posting daily specials and pictures of the restaurant’s most popular dishes and catering orders.  “I’m here 6 days a week, but I love it,” said Angelo. “Cranford is a great community and a great place to be.” Patrons can thank Angelo’s wife, Lily, for bringing him to town. The couple and their daughter Allie moved to Cranford 5 years ago, when Lily said she wanted to move to Union County and insisted on settling in Cranford. We’re thrilled that they chose Cranford, and love to see that a beloved Cranford institution remains in good hands.
