Cranford First Aid Squad

The Cranford First Aid Squad was formed by Cranford residents in 1953 and has been a part of the town ever since. While many town residents may know about the existence of the First Aid Squad, few are aware that the organization is not affiliated with the township. The Cranford First Aid Squad is completely dependent on donations, which often come from local clubs like the Jaycees and Rotary Club, as well as from individual residents.

Out of the 75 current members on the squad, 22 are cadets aged 16-18. “Many of our cadets are interested in the medical field and find their interactions and experiences in the First Aid Squad to be invaluable,” said First Aid Squad President Kent Lucas. “A number of them end up going into public safety careers, including becoming EMTs, fire fighters, and police officers.” While the squad values its young members, there is also a need for older members who live in the area. Volunteers don’t need any training, as they can also serve as drivers and help with administrative and fundraising efforts.

The First Aid Squad is open weekdays from 6:30PM-5:30AM, and 24 hours on the weekend. Volunteers will stay at the building overnight to reduce travel time. On a normal night they’ll respond to at least 1-2 calls, averaging around 100 calls a month. The First Aid Squad also lends out medical equipment including wheelchairs, crutches, canes, and more to local residents. Members of the First Aid Squad also participate in health and medical training, and will donate their time to outdoor community events, standing by in case emergency care is needed.

The organization always stresses that patients will never receive a bill from the First Aid Squad. Thanks to the generous donations the First Aid Squad receives, operating costs are completely paid for.
