Clarification on Business Hours and Regulations in Cranford

On March 15th, Cranford Township Commissioners, in consultation with the Downtown Management Corporation Board, announced precautionary measures for conducting business during the coronavirus emergency. Subsequently, Governor Phil Murphy issued Executive Order 104 instituting various closings and limiting social interaction in attempt to combat COVID-19.

In the interest of being consistent with the Governor’s Order and to reduce confusion, the Cranford Township Committee will amend local rules to mirror Executive Order 104. Township Commissioners and Township professionals are monitoring all aspects of this serious emergency and will adjust, as directed by the State. Effective today, the following State guidelines will apply to certain Cranford businesses:

  • Non-essential retail, recreational and entertainment businesses may remain open from 5 am to 8 pm but must limit their occupancy to no more than 50 persons and adhere to social distancing, rigorous safety and hygiene precautions (Sanitize surfaces, door handles and equipment throughout hours of operation). These businesses must cease daily operations from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m.
  • This order permits barber shops, hair and nail salons to operate under same guidelines as above. We strongly encourage these businesses operate by appointment rather than walk in service to limit the number of patrons in the shop at one time to avert the risk of spreading Covid-19.
  • Essential businesses, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, medical supply stores, gas stations, healthcare facilities and ancillary stores within healthcare facilities, are exempted from this provision. These businesses should stagger appointments, when possible, to prevent too many people in the business at one time.

It is our collective responsibility to take action to reduce the transmission of coronavirus in Cranford. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. All businesses should do their best to practice social distancing between customers.

These steps are being taken to protect both our residents as well as employees of our local businesses. We understand that these measures will impact residents and families, as well as our business community, which is so important to the success of Cranford. We remain committed to supporting our business community now and long after this emergency is   resolved.

At this time, our paramount concern is to #FlattenTheCurve – these actions will ensure we do not overload our health care system, and will help protect all residents, especially the most vulnerable.

We are committed to keeping you informed and encourage you to follow the Township on Facebook and check the website www.cranfordnj.org for accurate and current information. During this emergency, I will be sending updates on a regular basis.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.
